I completely missed this since I haven't been in twitter as much but I just got into reddit and when I joined The Martian subreddit I saw that in February Andy Weir had released an inbetween-quel of the novel on his blog!

The Martian: Lost Sols
In the book it's explained that Mark uses a combo of human waste to compost and some earth microbes/bacteria that he had brought with him. When the airlock blew and the Hab decompressed it not only killed the potatoes so he didn't really have any available to grow but he also thought it had killed all the microbes. He could reproduce some with his own waste but there wouldn't be the same variety as he no longer had the rest of the crew waste and the Earth soil microbes which were important.
I'm 90% sure in the book that Mark later realises that some of these microbes actually did survive the decompression and started reproducing again but it probably wouldn't have been that helpful given the timeline of starving vs growing potatoes and again I'm fairly certain he couldn't grow the potatoes anymore because they got instantly freeze dried. The potatoes were actually the opposite of rotten as the Martian atmosphere would likely be a great way to preserve the potatoes.
We're still here, just not a lot of new things to talk about :(
So I somehow missed that several years ago around 2015, James S. A. Corey authors of The Expanse books had made a few Andy Weir/The Martian references in their books and then Weir and Corey had jokingly agreed that the two books were set in the same universe.

A lot of people took this as canon until slightly more recently around 2018, Weir clarified they were all definitely joking.
Now I noticed a few The Expanse related things on various pages, I think it would make more sense to add The Expanse stuff to either it's own page about crossover references and possibilities rather than add information about the Expanse to pages where it would otherwise be relevant, for example the timeline page
https://the-martian.fandom.com/wiki/Timeline
Which has this reference at the bottom of the timeline: 2214: Solomon Epstein invents a revolutionary new Fusion Drive offering unparalleled performance.
Anyone have any thoughts on this? Best to just make a new page and get rid of any other mentions? Any other suggestions on the best way to include it?

By next year Weir will have three published novels The Martian, Artemis and Project Hail Mary.
Artemis had its rights bought by Fox and is now owned by Disney and has Lord and Miller attached to direct. Project Hail Mary had its rights bought by MGM and has Ryan Gosling attached to star and produce.
The question is which book will get a movie first, the book currently stuck in Disney limbo or the book that's not even out yet so we don't even know if it's good or not?
I think they were doing tests on plants in lower gravity ect so just having the plants in space for so long would be information. They did stuff on the Hermes too, not just on the Hab but idk.
Two years too late but Ares 1 presupply mission was to Valles Marineris, it's on the wiki page for Ares I, the info was added by Spacewalker1 like 3 years ago but I don't know where they got it from because back in the day I didn't reference and I didn't enforce/encourage referencing on the wikia. I have no clues for Ares 2.
What a coincidence! Clearly this is a sign from the universe. TBH since you posted the question its been bugging me as well, I couldn't figure out why he would go outside either, even when I rewatched the movie I looked out for the answer and couldn't figure it out so I'm glad I finally found an answer.
Glad to help!
Someone else on the internet has asked this exact question. There is a good reason it's just more of a book thing than a movie thing.
Guys our wiki now has little awards you can win with customised martian names. You can earn points and get ranked so check those out if you want to do that. And the medals are for stuff you would do anyway like edit articles and add pictures and talking to other people on the wiki!
